About mindfulness

Students from diverse backgrounds participating in a school-based mindfulness program

WHAT I BELIEVE BASED ON EVIDENCE BASED PRACTICES

I wholeheartedly embrace the belief that within every individual resides the potential for a life brimming with fulfillment and purpose. My approach centers on empowering a diverse range of clients, from elementary school students to those in college, to cultivate self-awareness, discern their values and aspirations, and forge concrete pathways to bring these aspirations to fruition, all while fostering mindfulness.

My unwavering commitment lies in creating a safe, non-judgmental sanctuary wherein clients can mindfully explore their inner realms with confidence, actively advancing towards their desired goals.

MINDFULNESS CAN CALM ANXIETY FROM MASS SHOOTINGS

As we look at the many mass shootings and youth violence that surrounds us today, mentoring programs and stop the violence conferences are not enough. Our students need to be taught from the “inside out”.

PREVENTION & EARLY DETECTION

Teaching them about emotions and where they come from at an early age can prevent the onset of some of these violent attacks. Portsmouth is listed as the most dangerous city in Virginia.

Schools today face increasing challenges related to student behavior, including physical altercations, emotional escalation, and disruptive conduct.

Traditional disciplinary approaches often respond after an incident occurs. Mindfulness offers schools a way to intervene before behavior escalates.

When implemented consistently, structured mindfulness practices provide students with practical tools to recognize emotional triggers, regulate responses, and make safer choices in moments of stress or conflict.

From Reactive Discipline to Preventative Support

Graphic illustrating the difference between reactive and proactive responses in decision making

Schools incorporating mindfulness report a measurable shift from reactive discipline to proactive behavioral support.

Observed outcomes include:

  • Fewer physical altercations between students

  • Reduced incidents of fighting and aggressive behavior

  • Decreased emotional escalation during conflicts

  • Improved student ability to pause before reacting

Mindfulness does not replace discipline policies—it strengthens them by addressing the root causes of impulsive behavior.

How Mindfulness Impacts Student Behavior

Impact on School Safety and Learning Environments

Students practicing mindfulness to build emotional awareness and self-regulation skills

Mindfulness practices help students develop:

  • Emotional awareness (recognizing frustration, anger, anxiety)

  • Self-regulation skills (breathing, pausing, refocusing)

  • Improved impulse control

  • Greater empathy and peer awareness

These skills directly influence how students respond in high-stress situations, reducing the likelihood of physical or verbal escalation.

Schools utilizing structured mindfulness programs such as Inner Explorer report improvements in overall school climate, including:

  • Safer hallways, classrooms, and common areas

  • Fewer classroom removals due to behavioral incidents

  • Reduced strain on administrative and disciplinary staff

  • More predictable, calm learning environments

When students are equipped with tools to manage emotions, the entire school benefits—not just those experiencing challenges.

Supporting Staff Without Adding Burden

Addressing Behavior Before It Becomes Discipline

Educators collaborating to discuss strategies that support student behavior and classroom management

Teachers, administrators, and guidance counselors report that mindfulness:

  • Integrates easily into the school day

  • Supports existing behavior frameworks (PBIS, MTSS, restorative practices)

  • Reduces time spent managing repeated behavioral incidents

  • Improves staff confidence in de-escalation strategies

Rather than adding another intervention, mindfulness supports what educators are already doing, making behavior management more effective and less exhausting.

Addressing Behavior Before It Becomes Discipline

Mindfulness shifts the focus from punishment to skill development. Students learn to:

  • Identify emotions early

  • Use strategies to calm themselves

  • Resolve conflicts with fewer adult interventions

  • Take responsibility for choices

This approach helps schools address behavior at its source, rather than cycling students through repeated disciplinary actions.

Schools implementing mindfulness as part of a comprehensive behavioral strategy can expect:

  • Reductions in physical altercations and aggressive behavior

  • Improved emotional regulation among students

  • Calmer, safer learning environments

  • More efficient use of administrative and instructional time

Mindfulness is not a replacement for discipline—it is a protective layer that helps prevent incidents from occurring in the first place.

EDUCATOR SUPPORT & IMPLEMENTATION DESIGNED BY EDUCATORS

Why Teachers and Guidance Counselors Support Mindfulness in the Classroom

For any initiative to succeed in schools, it must work for the people who carry it every day.

Teachers and guidance counselors consistently emphasize that mindfulness is effective not because it adds something new—but because it supports what they are already doing.

When implemented with intention, mindfulness integrates seamlessly into classroom routines and counseling practices without increasing workload or disrupting instruction.

Built to Fit Real Classrooms

  • MTSS (Multi-Tiered Systems of Support)

  • Restorative practices

  • Social-emotional learning initiatives
